Biography

At six years old, Lupe Avila already knew she wanted to be a teacher. She loved going to school then, and still loves it to this day. Sra. Avila started her teaching career in bilingual education in Dallas ISD in 1979, teaching elementary levels in Austin ISD, Alamo-Heights ISD in San Antonio, and Tyler ISD. When she moved to Houston in 2007, she taught in the Two-Way Dual Language Immersion Program with Spring Branch ISD. Sra. Avila joined Holy Spirit’s Spanish faculty in 2014. Since then, she has since taught hundreds of HSES students to take pride in their work, to persevere, and to value the learning that can come from mistakes—especially when one is learning a language. A prominent poster in her classroom reads: “Mistakes are proof that you are trying.”

Just as she teaches her students to keep learning no matter what, Sra. Avila continues to invest in her own education. She builds on her bachelor’s teaching degree from Texas Woman’s University and her master’s degree from Southern Methodist University with frequent professional development training in language acquisition at the primary and elementary levels. In her free time, she enjoys cooking and baking; traveling; and walks with her rescue dog, Buddy.
