Biography

Avery Smith joined HSES in the Fall of 2023. She previously worked in Spring Branch ISD for 2 years teaching 3rd grade and 3rd - 5th grade special education. Before that, Avery worked in a small district in North Carolina and taught 4th and 2nd grades. Avery says, "Teaching second grade is my favorite! I love seeing the lightbulb moment when students have been working and working and the hard concept finally clicks, it never gets old! Also, I love encouraging my students to explore and expand on their natural curiosities."

Avery was born and raised in Houston, but moved to North Carolina for college at Elon University and graduate school at Meredith College. Her undergraduate degree is in Theatre and Arts Administration. During Avery's senior year, she created a drama therapy program for children with Autism. Avery says, "Through that experience, I realized that I loved teaching and making a difference for kids in that way, which led me to get my masters in Special Education. I am able to use my theater/creativity skills in the classroom every day to create fun and engaging lessons, and make a difference in my students' lives."

In her free time, Avery loves to spend time with her husband, Will, their dog, Cricket, and their two cats, Pebbles and Patty Melt. She also likes to go on walks, spend time in nature, and do yoga. Avery also loves reading, and tries to read 100 books a year!
