Dear Parents,
As you know, education does not stop when the school year ends. Reading is an important part of education, and the summer is a wonderful time to relax and enjoy a good book. Reading strengthens vocabulary skills, and studies show that 30 minutes of reading each day increases SAT scores. Learning to enjoy reading will help students become lifelong readers.
Students enrolled in 8th grade for the 2011-2012 school year are required to read ONE book from the following list: Survivors: True Stories of Children in the Holocaust by Allen Zullo and Mara Bovsun; A Lucky Child: A Memoir of Surviving Auschwitz as a Young Boy by Thomas Buergenthal; OR Diary of Anne Frank. In addition, students are required to read a minimum of FIVE (5) additional titles of free choice.
The SUMMER READING LOG form indicating the FIVE (5) books he/she has read must be signed and returned to me on the first day of school in August. If he/she reads more books than required, he/she may list the additional books on the back of the SUMMER READING form.
Have a great summer!!
